Modular factory concepts

Implementation: The Institute for Sustainability has designed a production line according to the modular principle in standardised units (the size of standardised sea container). Units for a solar power supply and for the water supply were included. The sea containers had the advantage that they could be shipped easily and quickly. According to this principle, production follows demand. By manufacturing the products close to the customer, all emissions caused by long distribution routes are eliminated.

Modularisation and flexibilisation of production can avoid emissions and therefore increase environmental and resource efficiency.

Result: The scientific support and feasibility study by the Institute for Sustainability have shown that such a project is still associated with challenges (self-sufficient energy and water supply), but with existing supply infrastructure it is a very good possibility to avoid distribution-related emissions.
